FAQs

Have questions about our decommissioning and environmental services? You might find the answers you're looking for right here. Check out some of our most frequently asked questions below.

General Questions

What is decommissioning, and why is it necessary?

Decommissioning is the process of cleaning up abandoned oil and gas infrastructure, including pipelines and facilities, at the end of their life cycle. This helps companies mitigate liabilities and begins the process of restoring the land to its original state.

How do you ensure environmental compliance during decommissioning?

We develop a comprehensive plan before executing the project, ensuring that we use modern, well-maintained equipment and industry best practices.

What industries do you serve?

We primarily serve the oil and gas sector.

Do you provide turnkey decommissioning solutions?

Yes, we do. Our project management services cover everything from initial site assessments, AFE budgeting, and obtaining third-party agreements to on-site supervision, daily reporting, and cost tracking throughout the project.

Are your services available for both small and large-scale projects?

Yes, Wayco has handled projects ranging from single shallow gas wells to large-scale decommissioning of sour deep-cut gas plants.

Oil & Gas Facility Decommissioning & Demolition

What is the process for safely dismantling oil & gas infrastructure?

We typically break down each project into three phases:

  • Phase 1: Hydrocarbon and liquid removal – We safely depressurize the facility and clean vessels and piping using steamers and vacuum trucks.

  • Phase 2: Demolition – We bring in specialized equipment, including shears, excavators, and skid steers, to dismantle and prepare materials for metal recycling.

  • Phase 3: Underground facility removal – We excavate and remove cables, tanks, flow lines, piles, water wells, and septic systems, leaving the site ready for reclamation

How do you handle hydrocarbon removal?

We use steamers and vacuum trucks to extract hydrocarbons and transport them to an approved waste recycling facility.

Do you offer asset recovery and scrap metal recycling?

Yes. We leverage our industry connections with brokers and buyers to help sell assets and offset project costs. Additionally, we provide competitive rates for recycled steel based on current market conditions.

What happens to the concrete after demolition?

We strive to recycle concrete by breaking it down and removing rebar, ensuring it remains a clean product that can be resold.

Pipeline Services

What is pipeline pigging, and why is it necessary?

Pigging involves using a foam or poly pig that tightly seals within a pipeline. We use air or nitrogen (Nâ‚‚) to push the pig through, removing any residual liquids. This process prevents pipeline corrosion and reduces the risk of environmental spills. Wayco provides pigging equipment and adapter spools to fit most pipeline sizes and ANSI ratings.

What methods do you use for pipeline cleaning and purging?

We use air or nitrogen for pigging pipelines and steam for purging vessels.

How does cold tapping work in pipeline modifications?

Cold tapping is a safe and efficient method for checking pipelines for trapped liquids or pressure without shutting down operations.

What are the options for pipeline abandonment?

After a pipeline is properly pigged, we can either:

  • Excavate the line to the edge of the lease and weld a cap onto it.

  • Perform an internal cut on the riser, eliminating the need for a ground disturbance package and reducing costs.

Tank Decommissioning & Removal

What is the process for removing above-ground and underground storage tanks?

Step 1: Steam the tank and use air movers to lower LEL (lower explosive limit) levels before opening the manway.

Step 2: Wash the tank.

Step 3: Either shear down the tank for recycling or transport it off-site.

How do you manage site cleanup and contamination risks?

Our experienced crews maintain a clean and organized worksite throughout the demolition process. We bag insulation and waste materials for proper disposal at landfill sites. A well-managed site enhances safety and reduces costs.

Metal & Cable Recycling

What types of metals and cables do you recycle?

We can recycle all types of metals and cables.

Do you offer industrial scrap processing services? Yes, we do.

How do you ensure environmentally responsible recycling?

We partner with industry-leading recycling companies with strong reputations for environmental responsibility.

Excavation & Heavy Equipment Services

What types of excavation services do you provide?

We offer excavation services for underground infrastructure removal as well as new installations.

How do you handle pile removal?

Depending on the type of pile, we either excavate and remove it or break it off 20 feet below ground level.

What equipment do you use for facility removals?

Our equipment includes excavators, skid steers, hydraulic shears, breakers, pulverizers, and picker trucks. If a project requires additional equipment, we source the safest and most cost-effective option.
